A laptop too old for Xubuntu

Today I'm working on breathing some new Linux life into a old Windows 95 laptop. The specs are extremely low end by todays standards: 150 Mhz processor, 3 Gig hard drive and 96 Megs of RAMs.

I tried the Xubuntu alternate install CD first. I let it run overnight, and in the morning, it reported it was only 66% done! So slow.

The first impression was unimpressive. Right off the bat, it had exhausted the real memory before I even launched any applications. It was using about 45 Megs of hard disk space. From there, some basic things didn't work: Attempting to start Firefox crashed the X server, requiring a new login. And further, while the wireless card was automatically recognized, it didn't connect automatically to the network.

I like Xubuntu for older systems, but this system is apparently too old for it! Perhaps the problems I've run into are solvable, but I think I'll move on trying Puppy Linux instead and see how that goes.
