Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn Will NOT Have Proprietary Video Drivers

The Ubuntu Technical Board has decided to NOT include the proprietary video drivers from ATi, nVidia, and so on in Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn.

From the Technical Board's mailing list found here:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2007-February/000098.html

"There has been a great deal of discussion within the Ubuntu community regarding a technical proposal (the enabling of Composite support by default) which would necessitate the use of certain closed-source video drivers in a default installation of Ubuntu. In response to this controversy, a meeting was convened among representatives of the Technical Board and Community Council to evaluate the issues. "

Another reason that they are not going to include the the above mentioned packages is that the Technical Board doesn't feel that the compositing window managers like Beryl and Compiz have not been tested enough to be included. Even though they do think that they are important to "enabling a richer, more immersive desktop experience, and as such, is relevant to the mission of the Ubuntu project.

Another development from this public notice is that the Power PC version of Fiesty will be considered unofficial. All that really means is that Canonical isn't going to be throwing money at it. It doesn't mean that there won't be anyone working on it, it just means that it's been turned out to the community. They did this because the main user of PPC chips (Apple) has switched to Intel chips.
